Jenn with Dr. Charles Runels

The Vampire Facial, also known as the platelet-rich plasma (PRP) facial, was first made popular by none other than Kim Kardashian. Her social media posts peaked followers’ interest and played a big role in making the Vampire Facial go mainstream. Although Kim K made this cutting-edge new treatment a household name among women fighting the aging process, she was not the one who coined the phrase. PRP Facials were first referenced as the Vampire Facial by Dr. Charles Runels, a cosmetic surgeon in Mobile, Alabama in 2010. Dr. Runels forged the way of the anti-aging phenomenon by making use of PRP to accelerate the inherent healing powers of the skin.  The Belle Vous team has attended Vampire Facial and Facelift training with Dr. Runels himself.

PRP is essentially an increased concentration of autologous platelets suspended in a small amount of plasma after centrifugation. In laymen’s terms, we take your blood, spin it, then pipette off the yellow viscous substance at the top. That yellow liquid, AKA PRP, is considered gold in today’s beauty standards. The PRP is then smeared on the skin and microneedled into the dermis for deeper penetration.

Platelets play a fundamental role in hemostasis and they are a natural source of growth factors. These growth factors are in involved in key stages of wound healing. Basically, we are creating an environment for collagen to be released in a controlled wounding technique.

We are literally isolating and activating the magic of YOUR own blood and using it to restore your internal fountain of youth. There are at least eight (8) growth factors in our bodies that would normally be used to heal wounded or injured tissue. These growth factors work magically to increase collagen and create new blood flow when microneedled into the skin as PRP by creating a controlled wound to stimulate the regeneration process.

Benefits will be experienced with just one treatment and will peak approximately 12 weeks post procedure.  For correction of more advanced signs of aging, texture changes and acne scarring we recommend a series of 3-6 treatments spaced 4 weeks apart.

#1 Improves the quality and texture of your skin by stimulating the formation of new collagen and re-vascularization (increased blood flow) in the skin. As we age, we lose this valuable thing called Collagen by up to 40%. Controlled wounding of the skin by adding PRP helps to stimulate NEW collagen to be produced.

#2 Say GOODBYE to Acne scarring. By causing damage to the skin and stimulating collagen we are essentially breaking up the “glue” (fibrosis) that holds the skin down in it’s scarred position. The microneedling procedure helps to release the pock marks left behind from acne, naturally giving a smoother surface to the skin.

#3 Blackheads, Acne and Cystic Acne don’t stand a chance against the Vampire Facial. How does it do this? Why by decreasing sebum “oil” production of course. With the lack of oil, the epidermis doesn’t have to work so hard to shed off those dead skin cells that get stuck in the pores causing those nasty and unsightly conditions.

#4 Microneedling exfoliates the skin. Exfoliation refers to removing the upper surface of the epidermis, the stratum corneum. The procedure gets rid of those dead layers of skin that give a dull sallow look, leaving you with a brighter more luminous complexion.

You ask yourself, “Why not try this treatment? I want ALL these benefits!” But, WAIT! What can YOU expect from this treatment and how long is the procedure?

The procedure can take anywhere from 45 minutes to an hour and half, depending on what your Belle Vous treatment provider decides is going to give you the best results for your aesthetic goals and correction level. Just like no two people are created identical, neither is your skin. A pre-treatment consultation to evaluate your skin is key to ensuring a customized treatment plan is developed to meet your specific needs. On the day of your procedure, your treatment provider will draw your blood in the same manner in which your medical doctor would collect samples for lab testing. While the blood is being centrifuged to separate the PRP, your provider will clean your skin and apply a prescription strength topical numbing medication. This ensures your comfort throughout the treatment. After 30-45 minutes, your face will again be cleansed and teh microneedling process will begin. The PRP is applied to the skin throughout the procedure, helping the instrument to glide smoothly across the service while penetrating the concentrated PRP deep into the dermis. The small pinpoint blood spots that appear on the skin during treatment are why this is often referred to as a “vampire” facial, though they shouldn’t be feared. Slight bleeding during a Vampire Facial is a good thing, as it can be a sign of good penetration into the skin. Once the microneedle has been moved over the skin in circular motions to cover the entire face, any left-over PRP will be applied just as another serum might be after a typical facial. You can expect to look red, like a sunburn, for 24-48 hours and should avoid prolonged sun exposure for the same amount of time. Dryness and Flaking can be normal for up to 10 days as the skin heals. Daily use of a medical grade sunscreen, like our EltaMD product line, is highly recommended to preserve the results of this treatment.
